During the January transfer window everyone is looking for a steal. However, the real bargains are those players with less than six months remaining on their contracts, who can negotiate a ‘pre-contract agreement’ now with foreign teams or run down their contracts and leave as a free agent this summer.
Here are 10 of our favourite players who could be available for a free if they don’t sign new contracts…
It’s not often that a goalkeeper that played in the World Cup Final is available on a free the summer after, but that is exactly the case with Argentinian shot stopper Sergio Romero. The 27 year old Sampdoria keeper has 54 caps for Argentina and still has plenty of time left to become a top goalkeeper. Well worth looking at for any teams in need of a goalie (…Liverpool).
You know what you’re going to get with Dani Alves. The Brazilian full back would come with bags of experience at the very top level. Alves might be 31 but there is no doubting he is still one of the greatest fullbacks in the game. Well worth a look for any/every top side.
The West Ham centre half has continued to improve since joining the Hammers and in the last year has become a target for the big guns in England. The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have been tracking Winston’s progress over the past year, although they will not be the only clubs sniffing around the New Zealand captain come June.
The 22 year old Swiss defender has caught the eye of coaches around the world. An all round footballer who is solid at the back and also capable of helping out going forward. At only 22, Schar has plenty of room to improve and become a vital cog in any teams defence.
‘The Ukranian Messi’. Konoplyanka is rumoured to have been close to leaving Dnipro on various occasions, but it was last summer where the rumours really heated up. Liverpool were rumoured to have a deal agreed only for the move to fall through. Konoplyanka could prove a a real asset for whoever snaps him up (if he leaves.)
A World Cup winner from Real Madrid on a free? Now that’s tempting. Khedira seemed to be out the door last summer with both Chelsea and Arsenal heavily linked as Real Madrid aimed to cash in, but remained at the Bernabeu to see out his contract. Sami is a midfielder who could walk into pretty much any team in the world, and there will certainly be plenty of suitors should he leave Real Madrid this summer.
Manchester City are still desperate to clinch a deal to keep hold of the versatile England midfielder, but as of yet James Milner hasn’t signed up to remain with the Premier League Champions. The 29 year old will certainly interest the majority of the top sides. Rumours suggest that Milner has been touted by Liverpool as their potential Gerrard replacement, although I’m sure he is seen as a perfect fit by the greatest teams around the world.
