Just like at the Nou Camp with Xavi, and Anfield with Gerrard, FC Basel had to say an emotional farewell to their captain and club legend as Marco Streller played his final game. The 33 year old striker had become a part of the club during his two stints, and will always be remembered as a true FC Basel legend. Club President Bernhard Heusler made it perfectly clear what the veteran striker meant to the Swiss club declaring
“He embodied the values of the club and was always a role model.”
The feeling is definitely mutual. When looking back on his career Streller spoke of dreams coming true by playing for his boyhood heroes.
“As a boy I had that huge dream of playing for FC Basel. To be part of the club’s history makes me proud and is touching. In my eyes, I can look back on a dream career.”
Knowing their mutual love for one another it is no surprise that the final game of Streller’s career was such an emotional occasion. FCB fans displayed some incredible tifos for their beloved captain.
