Everyone including us at Copa90 have much loved FM/CM memories. Most of these memories involved those ‘wonderkids’ who would set the world (…virtual world) alight. The next question you always ask yourself… “I wonder what happened to that kid… he was ridiculous”. Everyone knows the story of cult hero Tonton Zola Moukoko, so we looked elsewhere to see what happened to a few of our other favourites.
What happened to Cherno Samba…
It would be wrong to not include Cherno Samba. The Millwall youngster had to be bought. He would bang them in at any level, and a lot of them. The hype surrounding Cherno was not just virtual. As a fourteen year old, the Millwall academy player was touted for the top. After a trial at Liverpool, Houllier was desperate to sign Cherno and offered an incredible £2m for the Gambian striker. Millwall chose to hold on to their ‘starlet’ and the breakdown in the move left Samba disillusioned with the game. After stints in Spain, Finland, Greece and Norway, Samba is now without a club. However, Samba himself is still loved throughout the world for his in-game exploits. Rumour has it, Cherno once called up his phone provider to try and change his phone contract… only to hear hours of chat by the guy on the other end, who told Samba how important he was to the success of his Championship Manager team, that in itself is a fantastic story. The guy must have felt like he’d met his idol… we know we would.
What happened to Freddy Adu…
The most famous of all. Freddy Adu, the American star, must have been signed by every player of FM at least once. Surely. He was very much a hot prospect in real life but even more so in the game, winning accolade after accolade for every manager who signed the attacking midfielder.
Everyone seemed to be backing Freddy. From day one he was interesting the top clubs in the world. After three impressive years at DC United, Adu moved on to Real Salt Lake where he didn’t really settle. When Europe came calling Adu must have thought this would be the start of a massive career. Moving to Benfica, Freddy Adu began to falter. The player who would tear apart all in front of him on FM struggled to settle at any club and has now featured for over 10 different clubs. After a brief stint as a nightclub promoter, Adu moved to Finnish side KuPS, and has had a career that spans the globe. Now looking for a new challenge after deciding to leave Finland, it remains to be seen where Adu will finish up.
South America was always a great hunting ground for future stars. Cardenas was exactly that. The colombian attacking midfielder started off with outrageously good stats. He could play however you wanted him. Attacking midfielder? box to box? take your pick, he could do anything. Available for peanuts, Sherman was another absolute must buy.
Sadly there’s little you can find out. However, Sherman clearly has decent ability. For the Colombia under 17’s the ‘wonderkid’ scored an impressive 14 goals in 11 games and also netted for the Under 20’s 7 times. So the judgement was not misplaced. Now 25, Cardenas is currently on a loan spell at Atletico Mineiro in Brazil, playing 12 times since his move from Nacional in Colombia.
What happened to Nicolas Millan…
Millan was arguably the player who plenty saw as the player with the biggest opportunity of ‘making it big’. As a 14 year old Nicolas Millan made history for Chilean club side Colo-Colo. Touted as the ‘Chilean Cristiano Ronaldo’ he was a youngster who looked destined for the top. Now at Union Temuco Millan is still trying to establish himself scoring 4 goals & 4 assists so far this season. At only 23, Nicolas still has years ahead of him, and it just seems surreal to think we used to buy this guy 9 years ago! NINE?!
What ‘wonderkid’ is your FM hero?
