The guys at Footy.com have come up with more outstanding ‘Back to the Future’ concepts, teaming up with Classic Football Shirts to take the newest stars of the Premier League and put them in their old club’s kit. This time around, it’s Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling and Aleksandar Mitrovic!
This adidas design features the three pronged sponsor/badge combination that adorned the shirts of Manchester United in the 80’s and early 90’s. While the club’s recent switch to adidas saw a similar return to this classic design (based on the 88-90 shirt), it is somewhat hampered by the overly garish Chevrolet sponsorship logo. The clean white Sharp logo is much more befitting of a shirt that is simple and understated. In addition, the trefoil adidas logo always bring back those nostalgic memories.
The unmistakable sky blue of Manchester City. The kit – worn for the first time in 1997, saw the introduction of new sponsor Kappa, ending a 63 year association with Umbro. This shirt will evoke turbulent memories for Man. City supporters. Relegation to Division Two in 1998, was followed by dramatic play off promotion back to the First Division in the season afterwards. This shirt will be closely associated with cult heroes such as Shaun Goater, who fired the club forward with 17 league goals in the 98-99 season.
Synonymous with the Kevin Keegan ‘Entertainers’ era, the qualities of this shirt will live long in the memory for NUFC fans. The shirt sparks recollections of pulsating football and a team that played with wild abandon. Perhaps the most iconic element of the shirt is the suitably apt Newcastle Brown Ale logo, featuring the Tyneside skyline in all of it’s glory. Another key feature to this shirt, is the classic Grandad collar. Button up, or button down – it typified the class and swagger associated with Keegan’s men.
