A sort of war has broken out between between Cypriot club Omonia’s Gate 9 and the club committee/president.
Historically, Cyprus’ communist party, the AKEL has been closely connected with the club. In recent months, the party has been increasingly involved in running the club, with many of its party members directly participating on Omonoia’s board. Many believe AKEL uses the team as a proxy to attract voters.
With Club elections set for May, people who share common views with the ultras are giving their candidacy. The next couple months will be extremely interesting.
Omonoia’s president and committee have become the first to employ the new anti-supporters law by handing a banning order to some ultras members denying them access to stadium. This action is a blatant disgrace to Omonoia’s ideals of revolution and anti-fascism.
They have also given the names of some of their members to police, for going to Omonoia’s central office and protesting. In the minds of most fans, this is an act of panic on behalf of the committee who fear that their time at the club may soon come to an end. Gate 9 has answered by calling all supporters to boycott ALL games until the end of the season with the slogan, “If one of us is not allowed in the stadium…None of us will go until the bans will finished”.
