Manchester United announced on the weekend the midfield signings of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. It was the recruitment of the latter that really sent shockwaves through the Premier League though, and the World Cup winner’s decision to join the Red Devils is sure to satisfy United fans, who have been yearning for an established midfielder to bolster their options and improve their experience in the middle of the park. More interestingly, could the signing of Schweinsteiger persuade his German counterpart Thomas Müller to swap the Allianz for Old Trafford?
It would certainly be a good acquisition for Man United, who lacked quality in all areas of the pitch last season, but would Müller really move away from the German champions and Champions League contenders? Though the interest seems to emanate largely from United’s camp, Schweinsteiger’s statement that “Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for” hammers home the reality that, despite their recent relative lack of success, Man United still has the pull of a global footballing heavyweight that could lure the biggest stars – including Müller. If van Gaal complements a Di María resurgence into the world-class form with a signing like Müller, Man United will have to be considered title contenders for next season.
