In this week’s Comments Below, Poet and Vuj discuss the transfer rumours surrounding Manchester United, as well as the confirmed signing of Argentinian goalkeeper Sergio Romero. Though van Gaal has already made five first-team signings this summer, Man United continue to be linked with high-profile players such as Ibrahimović and Barca’s Pedro. As part of van Gaal’s squad overhaul, the Swedish striker could be the last piece of the jigsaw for a Man United team that is increasingly occupied by international superstars.
After last year’s somewhat underwhelming season for the Manchester giants, this summer has been viewed as a crucial transfer period for van Gaal’s side. In order to return to the top of English football, an improved defence and midfield, in addition to keeping hold of David De Gea, is absolutely essential. It seems that van Gaal has made strides in this regard, signing right back Matteo Darmian, established defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, the hugely experienced Bastian Schweinsteiger, and the precociously talented Memphis Depay. In spite of De Gea’s prospective departure to Real Madrid, Man United already look a far stronger and more solid side in their own half of the pitch.
By van Gaal’s own admission, though, problems remain for them in the final third of the pitch with respect to creativity and ruthlessness in front of goal. Contrary to the belief that the sale of van Persie has significantly weakened United’s front line, his departure could pave the way for the arrival of an even bigger star in attack. Slightly lost in the furore of talk of an imminent £22 million deal for Barcelona’s Pedro, rumours of a move for PSG’s Ibrahimovic have recently resurfaced thanks to reports that his future is in his agent’s hands. If United do manage to capture both of these forwards, Man United would go into the new season resembling an English Galácticos – an impressive yet slightly haphazard team of undeniably talented superstars.
A midfield three of Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Depay behind a front three of Rooney, Pedro and Ibrahimovic would be an incredible improvement on last year’s disappointedly fragile and unimaginative midfield and attack for United. Whether playing all of these players at the same time would work out in practice is another matter, but if the rumours of a Di Maria-Ibrahimovic swap are true, theree are certainly exciting times ahead for Man United.
