I’m a guy from a small town on the outskirts of the biggest city in the world, Queens (ayyee!). Though football has always been a part of my the culture of my family it wasn’t an active part of my life until I was old enough to appreciate it (you can bring a horse to water, amiright?). I remember the first time I laid eyes on Zizou in the 98 world cup, the first time I heard the swell of hymns of active support, and my life was completely changed forever. From that moment on I couldn’t get enough.
The reason I applied to Copa90, is because I believe in the collective power of football in the sappy romantic way they talk about in the movies. A collective tribal identity that can represent a small barrio in Spain, or an oppressed regional identity in North Africa. The power in collective effort of these tribal identities that can be used for good just as well as it can be manipulated for evil. Also, your documentaries are pretty dope, so there’s that…
What is your favourite Copa90 video and why?
The Bohs/Rovers Derby Days Video-Two small clubs with fiery supporters not concerned with the “champagne problems” of bigger derbies, just beating the piss out of each other
What is the best football game you have seen and why?
East River Derby 2015
My small hometown club New York Cosmos went up against MLS’ NYCFC in the fourth round of one of the oldest cup competitions in the world and came back from the brink of defeat three times to win it after penalties. There were thrills, there were tears, there was sick (twice in the back of the north stand), basic derby stuff.
