On Derby Days we’re always looking for something different and in Sarajevo we found it. We often talk about the importance of football to local communities, but rarely have we seen it so obviously as in Bosnia. The people of this country went through unimaginable horrors during the 1990s, and life is still incredibly hard, but football really does give the fans of these clubs something to feel good about. In the words of one Željezničar fan “we look to football for that little bit of happiness.”
The people of Sarajevo were some of the nicest you could hope to meet, unfailingly hospitable, friendly, interesting and eager to talk about football. And the spectacle of the derby is up there with any in the world. We’d urge anyone to go and visit this wonderful city, these wonderful people and these amazing football clubs.
