Gil Heron Played For Celtic

Gil Scott-Heron is widely considered an early architect of hip hop and neo soul music. He refered to himself as a “bluesologist” which he defined as “a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues.” He was an incredible artist who not only influenced some of your favorite artists but entire genres of music. See the end of this post for a evidence.

Well today, I learned that his dad was a professional soccer player from Jamaica who was the first black player to play for Celtic. He signed there in 1951 after playing professionally for the Detroit Corinthians and the champion Detroit Wolverines, where he was top goalscorer in the 1946 season of the North American Soccer Football League.

It never ceases to amaze me how many incredible stories there are in this sport. There is an endless supply of amazing soccer stories out there just waiting to be told.

And with that, here is the legend, Gil Scott-Heron.
